> The College of Physicians and Surgeons, founded in Chicago in 1882, was a medical institution that operated until 1913. Initially established by five physicians, the school saw fluctuating enrollment numbers throughout its history. Entrance and graduation requirements evolved, with the program extending to four years by 1893. The college gained clinical experience for its students through affiliations with Cook County Hospital and its own University Hospital. It also played a role in the formation of the Alpha Omega Alpha honor medical society. In 1897, the college was leased to the University of Illinois, becoming its medical department, though this was primarily a contractual relationship. Financial disputes with the University of Illinois led to the college's eventual closure in 1913 after its alumni association purchased its stock and transferred it to the university.
